Company Background

Atalaya was founded in 2002 by Angela Smith Kirkman, a veteran of the translation industry. Kirkman began her career in freelance translation in 1993 and graduated cum laude from the Colorado College in 1995. She began her undergraduate studies focusing on chemistry and life sciences (pre-med) and graduated with a degree in Romance Languages.  With a base in life sciences, Kirkman served for six years as a medical interpreter and translator for the State of California, private hospitals, medical offices, and translation and localization companies specializing in medicine and life sciences.  In 1999, Kirkman joined one of the industry’s premier life science localization companies. For four years she served the company as a Translator, Project Manager, IVD Regulatory Trainer, Recruiting Coordinator, and ISO Quality Management Representative.
As a project manager responsible for a half million dollars in annual revenue, Kirkman recognized the challenge faced by localization companies in building a support team of reliable, quality-focused people with an expert knowledge of the localization industry. Kirkman founded Atalaya in 2002 with a vision of creating a reliable, in-country, English translation team made up of localization industry veterans. Atalaya specializes in large projects, and is well-suited to handle jobs involving multiple linguists and components.
Based on Kirkman’s original vision, Atalaya provides excellence in project management paired with professional, highly-specialized English translations. Atalaya translates over three million words annually and has become the go-to English translation team that many of the world’s largest language service providers depend on with their most vital accounts.
